Wild Camping UK with Night Vision Goggles and Wildlife

First Night Back in the Phoxx 2

There’s something nostalgic about pulling the OEX Phoxx 2 back out. I’ve slept through snow, rain, and countless calm nights in this little tent, and tonight was no different—except for one new addition: night vision goggles.

I’ve got permission to be here, and I’ve picked a familiar woodland clearing. After clearing the area and pitching the Phoxx 2 (which always feels like reconnecting with an old mate), I set up camp and a small fire to see me through the night.

Camp Setup & Gear Breakdown

Tonight’s setup was built for comfort and curiosity:

  • Tent: OEX Phoxx 2 V2

  • Mat: Kilos Gear XL (10 cm thick—like sleeping at home)

  • Sleeping Bag: Rab Ascent 900 (warm and reliable)

  • Lighting: Flextail Gear pump/light combo

  • Cooking Gear: Foldable saw, billy can, and that new round skillet

Inside the tent? Kindle, bushcraft knife, and of course, my new AKASO Seemor 200 night vision goggles.

Trying Out the Night Vision Goggles

AKASO sent me the Seemor 200 goggles and naturally, I jumped at the chance to try them out. The unit offers IR black and white as well as AI-generated colour mode. With six buttons on top and tripod compatibility, it's easy to use and surprisingly sharp for the price.

When I finally powered them up and scanned the woods—rabbits frolicking, foxes stalking—I was sold. I could see clearly across the clearing and even watched my own camp in real time.

Fire, Flatbread, and Failures

So, food. Let’s talk about the garlic sausage, spicy noodles, and homemade flatbread attempt.

The plan: mix powdered milk, self-raising flour, garlic powder, cinnamon, and herbs to make flatbread. The reality: too much water, sticky dough everywhere, and a pan fire.

Good news? The garlic sausage and chicken mushroom pasta saved the day.

Wildlife, Logs, and Laughs

Later that night, I used the goggles to stalk my own camp. The clearing was alive—badger trails, foxes in the distance, and paths I hadn’t noticed by day. It was oddly peaceful, lying in the prone position with a glowing screen.

And the Phoxx? Still proving why it's a fan favourite for UK wild campers.

The Morning After

Woke to a chilly woodland with a warm Rab bag and the fire’s remnants waiting to be relit. With no gas, I had to stoke the fire to boil water for coffee. Wayfarers sausage and beans for breakfast hit the spot.
