Best Tarp Setup Hack for Wild Camping (Jungle Toggle Method)

When it comes to wild camping UK-style, a fast, efficient tarp setup is a game-changer. In this post, I want to share one of the best tarp setup hacks I've learned, courtesy of a fellow YouTuber — Greencraft. If you're into tarp camping, hammock setups, or just want to streamline your wild camp shelter in any weather, this one's for you.

What Is the Jungle Toggle Setup?

Jungle toggles and jungle rope are a brilliant, knot-free way to rig your tarp in the wild. Here’s what makes this system so effective:

  • Jungle Rope: Doubled-up paracord with overhand knots spaced about a fist-width apart.

  • Jungle Toggles: Short lengths of paracord with small wooden toggles attached.

  • No Knots Needed: Quick to set up and take down, even with gloves on.

This technique lets you set up a ridgeline and guy lines without fumbling with complicated knots — ideal in poor weather.

Step-by-Step: How to Set Up the Jungle Rope Ridgeline

Step 1: Loop Your Jungle Rope Around Tree #1

Wrap the rope around the tree and feed the toggle through one of the overhand loops. The knots will bind on themselves and hold tension naturally.

Step 2: Stretch the Line to Tree #2

Pull the rope tight, loop it around the second tree, and again pull through one of the overhand loops. Job done.

Bonus Hack: Use the Toggle as a Bag Hanger

One of my favourite features — that toggle hanging near Tree #1 is the perfect spot to clip your rucksack up off the wet ground.

How to Hang a Tarp Using Jungle Toggles

Step 1: Drape Tarp Over the Ridgeline

A 3.5 x 3.5 DD Tarp is ideal, giving you plenty of room for cover, cooking, or gear storage underneath.

Step 2: Attach Toggles to Corners

Grab a jungle toggle, thread the wooden peg through your tarp’s eyelet, then peg it out. No knots, no fuss.

Step 3: Adjust Tension Easily

Want a tighter pitch? Just pull the cord. Need more length? Clip another jungle toggle into the first one — double the reach, same security.

Why Every Wild Camper Should Try This Setup

Whether you're hammock camping, under a tarp, or just need emergency shelter fast — this system is a lifesaver.

  • Fast: Up in minutes, even with gloves.

  • Modular: Add length, tighten, reposition — all without untying.

  • Reliable: Held fast in 40+ mph winds.

Gear Featured in This Setup

  • Tarp: DD Hammocks 3.5m x 3.5m Tarp

  • Cord: Standard 550 paracord, doubled over

  • Toggles: Hand-carved from green wood with a simple drilled hole

  • Pegs: Any lightweight pegs will work

You can make your own toggles, or find alternatives online. Just make sure they’re light but strong.

Key Takeaways

  • Jungle toggles and jungle ropes make tarp setups quick, knot-free, and beginner-friendly.

  • Works incredibly well in cold or wet weather where knot tying is difficult.

  • Ideal for UK wild campers and hammock campers year-round.
